NDP Episode 49: The Relentless Dentist with Dr. David Maloley
Tuesday Aug 06, 2019
Tuesday Aug 06, 2019
I am super pumped about this this weeks episode as I got the chance to sit down with someone I really look up to. A podcaster, author, speaker, coach and mentor – Dr. David Maloley runs the Relentless Dentist podcast and has co-authored the Titans of Dentistry book.
I first heard Dr. Maloley speak on the Dentalpreneur Podcast and his talk really made a big impact on me. David is a huge proponent of self improvement and chasing after your ideal work life balance. He has a very powerful story and message about how we over came a lot of adversity in his own life and how instilling habits created the discipline needed to overcome and excel in these tough moments.
In this episode we talk about a lot of about the mindset, clarity, goal setting and execution required to create the lifestyle that you want and ultimately try and be happy. Happy with your work, happy with your life and constantly trying to better yourself as a person.
This episode is brought to you by Henry Schein Australia, Henry Schein is the leading distributer for dental practices in Australia. In this weeks episode I sat down with Dr. Clarence Tam out of New Zealand to talk about her dental journey. Dr. Tam is originally from a suburb of Toronto and went to my alma mater, University of Western Ontario for both her undergrad and dental school. She then completed a 1 year GPR at the prestigious Sick Kid’s Hospital in Toronto prior to eventually moving down to New Zealand. She is CPD junkie and became the first AACD accredited dentist in New Zealand, she has almost finished the Kois modules and is someone who has really made a lasting impression on me when it comes to dental education and pursuit of excellence. Dr. Tam is also heavily involved in teaching and runs Skulpting Skool 101 a hands on anterior and posterior composite workshop.
Since recording this podcast, I have indeed signed up for Kois myself and am heading over in December for the first 2 modules.
If you have friends, classmates and colleagues who you think would get value from these interviews please be sure to pass them along. If you’re a long time listener is you could rate and leave a review for the show on iTunes that would be amazing as well.

In this week’s episode I had the great pleasure of interviewing Dr. Aniko Ball who is a dentist in Melbourne, Australia. After decades of working with chronic neck and back pain issues, Dr. Aniko got passionate about ergonomics and founded Optimum Dental Posture which is a course and seminar that she runs several time per year.
Optimum Dental Posture's mission is to reduce the incidence of occupational musculoskeletal disorders in dentistry and to send a message of hope to dentists for recovery and prevention of pain and discomfort. And she was super generous with her time and knowledge in this episode sharing a lot of valuable information about posture, ergonomics and dental loupes.
As always if you enjoy this episode please be sure to share it with your friends, classmates and colleagues. All links and information that we talk about in the interview can be found on the shownotes.
I hope you guys enjoy this episode!
About Dr. Ball:
https://optimumdentalposture.com
Dr Anikó Ball founded Optimum Dental Posture after recovering from decades of work related chronic pain practising as a dentist.
Worldwide research shows an alarming incidence of occupational musculoskeletal disorders in the dental profession. Dental ergonomic research has focused on the equipment and the surgery layout - the Outer Ergonomics, overlooking the importance of the operator's efficiency in posture and movement - the Inner Ergonomics.
Optimum Dental Posture specializes in the recovery and prevention of work related injuries in the dental profession by training clinicians in the Inner Ergonomic principles of the Alexander Technique in posture and movement.
Optimum Dental Posture's mission is to reduce the incidence of occupational musculoskeletal disorders in dentistry and to send a message of hope to dentists for recovery and prevention of pain and discomfort.

In this week’s episode I sat down with US army veteran, host of the big things done podcast, founder of the dental app services, triathlete and D3 dental student at the University of Minnesota, Andrew Glover.
Andrew talks about his unconventional journey in to dental school and we spend a lot of time talking about some of the topics that I have become super passionate about over the past few years, entrepreneurship, habits and routines and triathlons among others. Andrew hosts the big things done podcast were he talks about leadership and accountability and discipline. He’s got one hell of a podcast voice that really puts my mumbling and stuttering self to shame.
As always I just wanted to thank all you listeners out there, the podcast has been exploding in popularity over the past couple months with a global audience and I am very excited to announce some upcoming sponsors for the show which will really help me improve the quality and value of the podcasts that I can deliver to you guys. A lot of great guests and interviews lined up over the next few months so I am really excited about the direction that the podcast is heading and it’s all thanks to you guys.

Welcome to a rebroadcast of one of the most downloaded episodes of the Noobie Dentist podcast with Dr. Bruce Freeman. This episode, originally released on March 5, 2018, quickly became the most downloaded episode and served as a tipping point for the podcast. Beyond download numbers and podcast growth, it allowed me to connect with Dr. Freeman and he has become a great friend and mentor. As it is graduation season in North America and a lot of the listeners are based in the United States and Canada, we thought that it would be a great opportunity to rebroadcast this episode as so many of its lessons and themes are directly applicable to the new grads entering the profession.
Dr. Freeman has certainly remained active since the airing of the original interview. He has been busy travelling all across the country lecturing on patient experience, continuing his work with the oro-facial pain clinic in Toronto and has just earned his yoga instructors credentials and is hoping to use yoga, breathing and mindfulness exercises to help dentists improve their mental health.
Dr. Freeman can be found:

Original Show Notes (episode 14):
A special 2 part series with Dr. Bruce V Freeman (@drbvf)! Dr. Bruce Freeman is a well renowned and respected orthodontist in Toronto who works in private practice and one of the top teaching hospitals in Canada where he focuses on oro-facial pain and TMD! He has become a mentor and someone who I often turn to for advice! Outside of dentistry, Dr. Freeman is an avid chef and likes experimenting with various recipes baking with grass fed butter! This 2 part series is special for me as it marks the first podcasts that I recorded in person with the guest.
In part 1 of this 2 part series, we focus on life outside of dentistry talking about various topics including finding a good work life balance, dealing with the ups and downs of being a dentist, burnout and a recurring topic on the noobiedentist podcast; side hustles!
As I’ve often mentioned in my podcasts, I’m a big fan of the long form interviews such as the ones done by Tim Ferriss and so this 2 part series is an exciting one for me! I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did recording them with Dr. Freeman!
To support the podcast please subscribe and be sure to rate the show! It really helps the NoobieDentist Podcast grow. Like and Follow on Instagram (@noobiedentist), please DM me for any suggestions about the show or if you are interested in coming on as a guest!!
Thanks for listening,

NDP Episode 40: From Associate to Practice Owner with Dr. Daniel Miller
Welcome back for another episode of the Noobie Dentist Podcast. In this week’s episode I sat down with Dr. Dan Miller out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Dan graduated from SUNY at Buffalo school of dentistry in 2015 prior to complete an AEGD residency. After working as an associate dentist for just over 2 years Dan recently purchased a practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have been lucky enough to connect with Dan over Instagram over the past couple of years and he has been a great mentor and friend, always willing to pass on tips and wisdom to help me improve as a clinician. In this podcast we talk about the importance of CE in today’s competitive market place, the importance of dental photography and how to implement it into your day to day practice as well what it has been like to transition from being an associate dentist into practice ownership. I enjoyed our chat and I hope you guys enjoy this interview as well.
